The Australian National Botanic Gardens National Seed Bank has entered an exciting new chapter, with its upgraded facility officially opened.

The Australian Government’s $5.7 million investment has increased the seed bank’s storage capacity, expanded its research capabilities, and created modern spaces for staff and volunteers.

With more than 4,000 species already stored, including 180 listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, the upgrade makes sure the seed bank is ready to protect even more of Australia’s unique flora into the future.

Among the new facilities are a seed biology lab, seed preparation lab, and an incubator room, alongside specialist imaging rooms for seed X-ray and microscopy.

An expanded seed dry room, a walk-in -20°C seed vault, and a dedicated 4–5°C cold room now provide state-of-the-art storage conditions for seeds of all sizes.

The project also delivered improved office and meeting spaces, giving staff and volunteers a better environment in which to collaborate, share knowledge, and continue their vital work.

The redevelopment included specialist seed-banking equipment, supported in part by $1.27 million in philanthropic donations - a strong sign of community backing for the seed bank’s mission.

These enhanced facilities will also strengthen the work of the Australian Seed Bank Partnership, an alliance of 10 conservation seed banks nationwide, which has already secured more than 13,000 plant species, including 942 off Australia’s nationally listed threatened flora species.

With the transformation now complete, the National Seed Bank is well positioned to continue its crucial role in collecting, researching, and storing seeds to safeguard Australia’s native plants for generations to come.
