National Seed Bank
The National Seed Bank supports the long-term conservation of Australia’s native plant species.
Working closely with researchers, land managers, First Nations partners and conservation organisations, the National Seed Bank contributes to the conservation of Australia’s plant diversity.
Its work supports species recovery and ecological restoration, helping ensure Australia’s native plants can thrive for generations to come.
Located in the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG), the facility plays a vital role in safeguarding our unique flora by collecting, storing and researching seeds from across the country. Inside, staff and volunteers carefully dry, clean and store seeds under controlled conditions to ensure viability for future restoration and research.
These collections act as an insurance policy against threats such as climate change, habitat loss, bushfire and plant disease.
Researchers test the conditions seeds need to germinate and investigate their ecology to support restoration efforts and nature repair.
Working in partnership with the ANBG Nursery, the National Seed Bank supports coordinated conservation efforts for threatened flora.
As a closed research facility with strict hygiene protocols, the National Seed Bank is not open to the public.
