The Australian National Botanic Gardens volunteer programs are diverse and contribute to some of the most essential functions at the Gardens. With a wide variety of program positions, there is sure to be one that suits your interests and talents.

The Gardens has been welcoming volunteers since 1985 and values the role and contribution of volunteers. 

Front of House Roles

Volunteer Guides

Enhance the visitor experience with daily informative tours, covering topics of science, horticulture and site history. Next intake starts March 2024. Email volunteer@anbg.gov.au for details.

Visitor Centre Volunteers

Offer excellence in customer service, general orientation and assistance to visitors to the Gardens.

Conservatory Volunteers

Offer excellence in customer service, engaging and educating visitors about the plants from Australia’s northernmost rainforests. Recruiting in 2024.

Back of House Roles

Herbarium Mounting 

Mount and prepare herbarium specimens (scientific samples of plant material) for storage and future use. Attention to detail essential.

National Seed Bank Volunteers

Process and prepare native plant seeds for conservation and research in the National Seed Bank. Attention to detail essential.

Seedy Volunteers

Seasonal activity undertaking field work to collect seeds for the National Seed Bank. Health check essential.

Horticulture Volunteers

Assist horticulture staff in maintaining and weeding specific areas of the Gardens.

Stocktake Volunteers

Support the stocktaking of the Living Collection.

Library Volunteers

Assist the ANBG Librarian to maintain our library and archives collections.

Photographic Collections 

Assist with documenting items and maintaining the photograph collection. Attention to detail essential.

Special Programs

Work on discrete projects requiring specialist skills.
